Programme Update: December 2017

During November, we have worked hard to complete the new school’s concrete structure. The concrete works to the residential block along Nile Street have now been completed on the second floor. The towers concrete lift core has now been completed to Level 11, whilst the floor slabs have been completed up to Level 6. A new concrete base for the towers material hoists has been constructed. The two hoists will be installed in December and allow the quick and safe transport of personnel and material to the upper floor levels of the tower. Similar hoists will be installed on the residential block along Nile Street in the future.

Community Engagement

A construction taster day was held at our Tiger Way site on Saturday 11 November. This was an opportunity for residents from across Hackney to explore a career in construction. Representatives from McLaren, Hackney Works and various trade subcontractors who are working on the Tiger Way site were on hand to talk about various aspects of the construction industry, and possible opportunities available.

Those who showed interest have been invited to join our pre-employment programme being run at the Southwark Skills Centre where they will commence a three week course at the end of which they will be able to undertake their Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) test. This will enable them to obtain a Labourers Card and start their construction career.

We have received our score from our second Considerate Constructors Scheme review and are proud to have achieved a score of 40, which was an improvement on our first assessment which scored 38.

We support Hackney Council in hiring local labour and we are currently recruiting. If you live in Hackney and are looking for a job or an apprenticeship, contact hackneyworks@hackney.gov.uk. Hackney Works is a free recruitment service run by the Council. Whether you’re just starting out, are looking for work or you want to change careers, they can advise you.
